Reassurance about Ebola risk

posted 10 Oct 2014, 02:11 by Clare Flintoff   [ updated 10 Oct 2014, 02:11 by Dale Collins ]

The school has received the following advice.... The risk of Ebola to the general public in the UK remains very low.  The recent outbreak of the Ebola virus primarily affects 3 countries in West Africa: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ebola can only be transmitted by direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person or animal.  Ebola is not a disease transmitted through the air in the way that flu, the common cold, TB and Noro Virus are. People who are not showing symptoms of the disease are not infectious. Therefore, medical teams do not seek to track contacts of people who are not ill, but who subsequently become ill. There are procedures operating at ports and airports in the UK and in the countries affected that will keep the risk of the illness spreading at a very low level.
This advice is very reassuring and the real facts of the situation are that travel to and from countries other than the small number in Africa is as safe as it ever was. There are no reasons why Ebola should affect our school’s plans, including parents, visitors and others who may be working with us.  You might like to let us know if you have traveled to any of the affected areas recently.
