James Campbell and The Charge of the Light Brigade

posted 16 Apr 2015, 12:32 by Sarah Merchant

Forty children from years 5 and 6 worked with the author James Campbell today. Apparently he was hilarious and inspired them to be confident writers.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... I mean school, forty other year 6 children studied the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson entitled 'The Charge of the Light Brigade.' Of course this involved charging across the playground, acting out each stanza! See the slideshow below for pictures!

Year 3 , 4 and 6 children from across the Pyramid really enjoyed working with the poet Fred Sedgwick - they were inspired to 'go for it' and learned that they did, indeed, have something valuable to say.

Whole School Reading - Polar Express

posted 11 Dec 2014, 13:20 by Sarah Merchant

We had a magical time reading ‘The Polar Express’ story by Chris Van Allsburg in classes and groups, and tried to get as many children as possible reading at once!  We would definitely recommend this book as a Christmas gift!

Here are some opinions from Dolphin Class:

‘I had a brilliant time. It was cool when the boy got to stand on Santa’s sleigh. In the book, there were brilliant views.’ Ben

‘I liked when the guards gave the children hot chocolate that was thick. I imagined drinking it all aboard The Polar Express’. Ashraf

‘I really enjoyed the story and liked how the train came to you so you didn’t have to go to the train. The hot chocolate was like melted chocolate bars!’  Belle

Well done to the Giraffe Class. Guy Parker Rees has answered your questions on the Federation of Children's Book Group's website.
We were chosen out of over 100 schools and the illustrator of 'Giraffes Can't Dance' was impressed with the questions.
Good job!   Mrs Merchant

Interviews with authors!

We have been chosen to interview two top authors/illustrators - Lyn Gardner and Guy Parker Rees (who illustrated Giraffes Can't Dance).
Quite fittingly, the Giraffe Class have compiled 5 questions for Guy Parker Rees. Can some of our older children send me some questions for Lyn Gardner? We need five questions!
