St Helen’s Nursery and Primary School

School Newsletter - Friday 3rd May

World Honour for SCC/EADT maths project!

You may have seen in the press news from New York that the EADT’s “Maths Challenge” project has won a prestigious international award from the International News Media Association (INMA).  The project won the PR and Community Service category which attracted 500 entries from 30 countries around the world.  Second in the same category was a newspaper based in Florida and third was a Brazilian media organisation!

We are very proud indeed of the fact that Miss Shete, our maths co-ordinator, wrote this Maths Challenge with one other Suffolk teacher.  Huge congratulations to Miss Shete for her work and the international recognition it has received!  Watch out for a new version of the Maths Challenge which will be back later this term!

Academy status

You may be aware that a number of primary schools in Ipswich are now in the process of becoming academies.  Our governors are aware that we need to consider the future of St Helen’s as a maintained Local Authority school and are currently in an “information gathering” stage looking at all of the options.  We are keen to find out if becoming an academy can help us to improve our school and give our children an even better deal.  We will be considering the information we have gathered at governors meetings during the term and will of course keep parents fully informed.  If you have any views at this stage that you would like to share with governors please put them in writing to Mrs Clare Moore at the school as soon as possible.

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school please ring to leave a message on our absence answerphone.  If no message has been left we will ring you.

Playground Scooters

Please do not allow your child to use their scooters in the playground.  We have already had one child in Reception injured by another child riding a scooter after school this week.

Home Computer Games

We have had to deal with a few incidents with our older pupils recently who have clearly been playing 18 rated computer games at home.  We do not feel it is appropriate for children to playing these games and certainly do not want them discussed in school in front of other children.

PE and Sports News from Miss Evans

At St Helen's we want to inspire the children to be fit for life and support the legacy of the Olympic games. Below is a list of opportunities for the children that the school, in partnership with Copleston, is offering:

On Wednesday afternoons until the end of the term Savannah Phase are having Football coaching delivered by an FA coach.  This will be on the playground.

Rainforest phase are having Cricket coaching delivered by a 'Chance to Shine' coach.  They will use the playground. We will also be taking part in National Cricket Day on the 18th June with cross curricular links to Cricket with Literacy and Maths plus Art and History. http://www.chancetoshine.org/news/say-g-day-to-national-cricket-day  On 22nd May we will be taking sixteen Rainforest children to a Cricket competition at Copleston.

We are launching the exciting Skip to be Fit programme on the 11th June, if you would like to participate when you collect your child just let the class teacher know.  It is a six week programme to improve the fitness of children and to use their real life data across the curriculum.   Have a look at this site to find out more http://www.skip2bfit.com/

Mrs Pattinson and Miss Evans will be taking a team each to the competition on 8th May.  It is very exciting as we have never taken Year 2 children to a competitive event before.  We believe if we come in the top three we will be through to the Suffolk Games on 5th July in Bury St Edmunds.

As you know we are through to the Level Two final on 20th May.  If we win that we will be through to the Level Three competition and Suffolk Games on the 5th July.  The team are doing exceptionally well in training.

Quad Kids

Miss Evans has entered two teams into this year’s competition on 26th June.  It is a fantastic event so if you can support the children please come along to Northgate Track.

We will be taking four children from Ocean Phase to compete in a Tennis Competition at Copleston on 12th June.

Sports Days

Savannah and Ocean Phase Sports day is at Sidegate field on the 16th July.  We will follow a similar format to last year.  Rainforest Sports day is on the 22nd July at Northgate.  More information will follow about both of these events closer to the time.
