EAL - English as an Additional Language

Support for Pupils with English as an Additional Language

Mrs Clarke supports pupils with English as an additional language (E.A.L. pupils) at St. Helen’s.

Communication is vital in all aspects of life, so in addition to Mrs Clarke, we have several staff who are available to help with translating when required.

  • Mr Ciuca is able to translate for our Roma community.
  • Mrs Islam is able to translate into Bengali for parents at parent consultation.
  • Miss Samani is able to translate for our Turkish families.
  • Mrs Guerreiro is able to translate for our Portuguese families.

Mrs Clarke works part-time with pupils in Key Stage 2 - Years 3 to 6.

  • The E.A.L. team works with individual E.A.L. pupils and with groups of pupils, primarily developing Literacy and Numeracy skills. The main role of the E.A.L. support staff is to facilitate the learning of the English language. Whilst Literacy skills in English are developing, the pupil’s home language is also valued. In this way the pupils emerge as confident E.A.L. learners.
  • It is very important that parents/carers continue to use the child’s first language at home in order to consolidate language acquisition. Research shows that if the home language has a good foundation, then additional languages that a child learns will develop more easily.
  • One important way in which you can help your child is to regularly engage in speaking and listening in your home language, discussing school and home experiences. It is also very important to take time to share reading books daily. After the text has been read in English, the story could be discussed in the pupil’s home language.
