Day 1
So all your signed football memorabilia, collectors cards and limited edition boxed cars are now online at www.sellstuffcheapwhileyourkidisaway.com. That should help to pay for a nice new pair of running shoes. The coach journey looked fun. I can tell because you were using that special eye trick of yours. The one where you concentrate so hard on the passing scenery that you need to have your eyes closed. I think I will be doing that a lot this week too - especially when your mother makes me sit through another of those suspense-filled TV dramas.

She tells me the 'Darling' bit in her last message to you was intended to be light-hearted with a big dose of irony. Mr Budd will tell you that irony is 'the suggestion of one meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite for humorous or emphatic effect'. I expect you laughed a lot at that. Here is an example of irony (using a typical conversation between me and your brother Ben):

Me: "Hello son, why don't you do a bit of homework before it gets to 10 o'clock?"
Ben: "Hello, Dad. Do you know, there's absolutely nothing that I would like to do more than knuckle down to some homework. That sounds spiffing."

Well, must dash. Jasper is barking at the front door because there is no one there (again).

Dad. x
