Reading

At St Helen's we believe that your reading journey is never done. Once your child has learned to decode, at St Helen's they will begin to explore reading as a way to engage with and understand the world around them.

Reading skills are taught using VFRIENDS and delivered through programs which will best support their individual learning needs. These include, but are not limited to:

SUCCEED in English Vision Statement

Writing

At St Helen's we believe that writing is one of the ways that our pupils learn to express their developing voice. Pupils are given a wide variety of opportunities to write across the curriculum, at all ages, in all forms.

Pupils are taught to be adventurous writers through the Power of Reading system, real world application and our 'Exciting Writing' sentences.

Phonics

At St. Helen’s we consider that it is vitally important that children have a secure understanding of the letter sounds and spelling system of the English Language. Phonic skills need to be developed in a systematic, staged approach in order for pupils to begin their journey to becoming, not only proficient readers and writers, but proficient learners.

Phonics is taught through ReadWriteInc, which empowers pupils to simultaneously develop skills across all three strands of English: reading, writing and oracy. This ensures pupils can read independently, even at the earliest stages of their literary learning journeys.
