Geography at St. Helen's Primary School

Geography at St. Helen’s Primary School inspires all pupils to become well-rounded global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet. Geography lessons prepare children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of their world and face the challenges that will shape our societies and environments, at local, national and global scales in the future.

We aim to instil an interest, fascination, curiosity and desire to investigate a variety of human and physical characteristics of different places, both in their immediate surroundings and in the wider world.

Children are provided with opportunities to use a range of geographical skills to help them understand, present, analyse and communicate a range of information either as an individual or collaboratively. These skills are put into practice both inside the classroom, and outside through local trips and fieldwork where appropriate.

“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exist across continents.”

Barack Obama

“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future.”

Michael Palin
