PSHE

MORE ON THE NEW APPROACH TO PSHE AT ST HELEN'S IS COMING SOON.

We will be using 1decision for PSHE at St Helen's

What is PSHE?

‘Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.’

 (DfE National Curriculum)

How does it fit with our school aims?

At St Helen's this subject allows pupils to explore their life, their community and their place in the world. The wider world is explored through trade, finance, safety and diversity. Children learn the correct vocabulary to discuss global and personal issues. These issues can be complex such as family, sexuality, racism to name a few. All of these areas prepare pupils for all the cultural experiences, health issues and decisions they may encounter in life so they can SUCCEED.

Within PSHE is RSE: relationship and sex education. Our policy states that the aims of this are:

‘… that our RSE approach helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives, in order to become informed, active and responsible citizens. The work we do in this area is taught explicitly and it lies within our PSHE curriculum. It also flows through all other curriculum areas and is regularly an area for learning as children negotiate their way through school - in their relationships with others, their tolerance and understanding of differences, their developing awareness of themselves and how they fit into a wider local and global community.’

Visitors such as magistrates and paramedics are used to support PSHE. Books too, here is an example of just some of them.

Some example lessons can be seen below.  Lessons are being reflected on and updated each year.

Please take time to read through the RSE parent presentation to have a clearer understanding of more sensitive but extremely important issues taught in PSHE.
